The situation with Kendrick is very heart breaking. I spent part of the day at the hospital with the family. Kendrick’s mother told me the entire story. The fire started in his sons’ room (faulty wiring) in the early morning while everyone was asleep. His 4 year old son woke up and saw the fire in the middle of the room and tried to get the 2 year old son to follow him to Kendrick’s room. The 2 year old caught on fire and became confused and somehow locked himself into a closet. The 4 year old woke Kendrick up and alerted him that the 2 year old is on fire. Kendrick quickly got his wife and 4 year old out of the trailer. Then he went in for the 2 year old and the infant who was a sleep in another room.

The house was a blaze and Kendrick could not find his son. Lucky the neighbors witnessed the smoke and ran to the infants side of the trailer where they removed the widow unit to create a hole and retrieved the infant. In the mean time Kendrick still could not find his son who was locked in the closet. Kendrick retreated outside to get a breath. When he emerged from the doorway the top layer of his skin was dangling off of him. He is African American, due to the severity of the burns his skin appeared PINK. After getting his breath he tried to go back into the house but the neighbors and his wife restrained him.

Kendrick’s mother is a very strong Christian women who has not slept since the accident and she is doing a wonderful job managing the incident. Per protocol I sent in a Chaplin to visit with the family in the Burn Center waiting room. The Chaplin did a wonderful job a bringing comfort to this family. As he spoke, the room full of people cried and nodded their heads with him. I was somewhat a skeptic of the Chaplin service, but in times of need they truly bring an increased level of value and professionalism. Needless to say they were well received and the family has already thanked us for the chaplain’s presence. Unfortunately, the family has no medical, home, or disability insurance. However, the community and Brock are busy raising money. The Baton Rouge news has featured Kendrick’s story for the past few days. Support for the family is excellent.
